35-Tonne Lifting Beam — Design, Fabrication & Proof Testing

Client challenge

The client required a bespoke lifting beam rated for a 35-tonne lifting operation.

The beam had to safely transfer the lifted load between the lower lifting points and the crane connection while controlling bending, shear, local bearing, connection and stability effects during lifting.

The design also needed to be practical to fabricate and capable of passing the required proof-load test before operational use.

CITA solution

CITA Engineering completed the mechanical and structural design of the lifting beam, including load-path definition, member sizing, connection design, engineering calculations and finite element analysis.

The finite element assessment considered the beam under the design lifting condition and the increased proof-load condition. Particular attention was given to peak von Mises stress, overall deformation and local stress concentrations around the lifting points, pin interfaces and welded details.

The assessment indicated that the main structural body of the lifting beam remained within the intended elastic design response for the assessed load cases and that calculated deformation was compatible with the required lifting duty.

Detailed stress and deformation plots were used to review and refine the beam geometry and connection details before fabrication.

CITA subsequently supported fabrication, technical queries, inspection and proof-load testing of the completed lifting beam.

Engineering design and analysis

Engineering calculations and finite element analysis were used to assess the load path, global deformation and local stress behaviour of the lifting beam and its principal lifting-point connections.

Outcome

The 35-tonne lifting beam was successfully designed, fabricated and proof-load tested for its intended duty.

The combination of engineering calculations, finite element analysis and physical proof testing provided the client with a verified lifting solution ready for operational use.
